Rustic Barn Wedding Photographer Sussex & Kent | Dale Weeks

I’m Dale, a documentary wedding photographer based in East Sussex. Rustic barn venues are some of my favourites to shoot — the texture, the light through the beams, the way fairy lights transform a space once the sun goes down. I’ve photographed weddings at barns across Sussex, Kent and beyond, and no two have ever felt the same.

No stiff poses, no awkward lineups. Barn weddings tend to attract couples who want something warm and relaxed rather than formal and stiff — which is exactly when documentary photography works best. I stay close to what’s happening and let the day tell its own story.

What makes Rustic Barn weddings special?

The Atmosphere
Rustic barn venues have a quality that’s hard to manufacture anywhere else. The exposed beams, stone walls, worn wooden floors — these spaces have accumulated decades of character and it shows in every photograph. The light behaves differently in a barn too. Soft and dappled during the ceremony, warm and golden as the afternoon progresses, and then something altogether richer once the fairy lights come on and the dancing starts. You don’t need to style a barn heavily because the barn itself is already doing the work.

The Variety
What surprises people is how different barn venues can be from each other. Farbridge is polished and light-filled with South Downs views. Montague Farm is a working farm with festival energy and wide open fields. Preston Court has a Victorian carousel and a Kentish barn that feels like a fairground. The Cherry Barn is a converted 17th-century Sussex barn tucked away outside Rye. The common thread is character — and character is exactly what documentary photography needs to work at its best.

Rustic Barn WEddings

Farbridge

A well-run barn venue that balances polish with a relaxed feel. It’s a good option if you want countryside surroundings without things feeling too formal or rigid.

  • Style: Barn, Modern, Refined
  • Best for: Full day weddings, larger guest lists, summer afternoons
  • Capacity: 120 +

Montague Farm

A rural Sussex setting that suits creative, non-traditional weddings. There’s a sense of freedom here — plenty of space, countryside views, and flexibility in how the day is structured.

  • Style: Rural, barn, relaxed
  • Best for: DIY-leaning weddings, glamping, festival energy
  • Capacity: Large and Flexible

Preston Court

Few venues commit to the festival feeling like Preston Court. A working carousel, outdoor ceremony spaces, and rustic barns — it’s a playground for couples who want their wedding to feel like a fairground. Guests hop between rides, wander the gardens, and dance late into the night.

  • The carousel is unlike anything else — joyful, chaotic, and brilliant to photograph
  • Outdoor and indoor spaces give the day a natural flow without anything feeling forced
  • Evening light over the gardens is consistently one of the best I shoot in Kent

Cissbury Barns

Set in open countryside with a sense of scale and light that works beautifully for photography. Weddings here tend to feel calm, spacious and grounded in the landscape.

  • Style: Countryside, secluded, natural
  • Best for: Spring and Summer Weddings, larger guest lists
  • Capacity: Medium Large

Nancarrow Farm

Timber barns, stone courtyards and wild flower meadows. It’s one of the most naturally beautiful venues in the country — the kind of place where the setting does the heavy lifting and the food is as good as the photography.

  • Style: Organic, rustic, wildly beautiful
  • Best for: Couples who want something close to nature, great food, and a venue with genuine soul
  • Capacity: Flexible, suits intimate to mid-size weddings

The Dreys

The Dreys combines the romance of a woodland setting with a well-organised venue team — ideal for couples who want the magic of the trees without the logistical pressure of a fully DIY site. A fairy-lit walkway leads through the woodland to the ceremony clearing, and the whole site has a considered, atmospheric feel from the moment guests arrive.

  • Fairy-lit woodland walkway to the ceremony — one of the most photogenic arrivals I’ve shot
  • The venue team handles the logistics so you can focus entirely on the day
  • Golden hour portraits in the surrounding woodland are consistently stunning

The Yoghurt Rooms

Hidden in the Sussex countryside, the Yoghurt Rooms is as close to a real festival as a wedding venue gets. Ceremony clearings, DIY setups, space for camping, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere — couples who choose it know exactly what kind of day they want.

  • Outdoor ceremony clearing surrounded by trees — feels completely removed from everyday life
  • The DIY ethos means every detail reflects the couple, not a venue’s house style
  • Brilliant for candid photography — guests spread out naturally and nobody’s performing

The texture, the light, and the atmosphere that modern venues simply can’t replicate. Exposed beams, stone walls, fairy lights — barns have accumulated decades of character and it shows in every photograph. They’re also incredibly versatile, working beautifully for intimate ceremonies and big parties alike.

I shoot regularly at Farbridge, Cissbury Barns, Montague Farm, Preston Court, The Dreys and The Yoghurt Rooms. Each one is completely different in character — see the venue guides above for the full picture.

Yes — many barn venues now include outdoor ceremony spaces, fields for tipis, and festival-style setups alongside the barn itself. I love photographing that mix of open air and intimate interior across the day.

Absolutely. Barns often have dim, atmospheric lighting — especially in the evening. I work with natural and available light throughout, keeping the warmth and atmosphere rather than flattening it with flash.

Yes — I photograph barn weddings across the UK. Nancarrow Farm in Cornwall is in my portfolio and I regularly travel further afield. Travel is included for most UK weddings.
