Woodland Wedding Photographer Kent
I’m Dale, a documentary wedding photographer based in East Sussex. I’ve photographed woodland weddings across Kent and Sussex for years — from hay bale ceremonies at The Paper Mill to fairy-lit clearings at The Dreys and festival-style weekends at Longton Wood. Every one has been completely different. Every one has been brilliant.
No stiff poses, no awkward lineups. Woodland weddings move at their own pace — ceremonies under the trees, long evenings around fire pits, dancing that carries on long after the sun goes down. I stay close to what’s happening and let the day tell its own story.
What makes Woodland weddings special?
The setting
Woodland weddings have a quality that’s hard to manufacture anywhere else. The light through the trees, the sound of the surroundings, the sense of being somewhere genuinely removed from everyday life — it changes the atmosphere of the whole day. Guests arrive and immediately relax. The formality drops. People gather around fire pits, wander through the trees, let the kids run. The setting does the work that most venues spend thousands trying to create artificially.
The freedom
There’s also a creative freedom to woodland venues that suits couples who know exactly what they want. No house style, no prescribed layout, no competing décor. You bring in what you need — a tipi, a food truck, a brass band, hay bales for seating — and the woodland wraps around it. The result is a wedding that feels entirely yours, photographed against a backdrop that looks extraordinary whatever the season.
Woodland Weddings I’ve Photographed
The Dreys
The Dreys combines the romance of a woodland setting with a well-organised venue team — ideal for couples who want the magic of the trees without the logistical pressure of a fully DIY site. A fairy-lit walkway leads through the woodland to the ceremony clearing, and the whole site has a considered, atmospheric feel from the moment guests arrive.
Longton Wood
A private woodland clearing that gives couples complete freedom to build the day exactly as they want it. Longton Wood attracts couples who are done with venue house styles and want something personal — bunting in the trees, mismatched chairs, a band playing as the sun goes down. It consistently produces some of the most joyful weddings I photograph.
The Paper Mill
Tucked away in Kent woodland, The Paper Mill is as close to a proper festival as a wedding venue gets. Couples have the run of the site — ceremonies on hay bales surrounded by trees, tipis for the reception, fire pits for the evening. It’s a venue that needs almost no styling because the woodland does everything.
How to Choose a Woodland Photographer in Kent
Woodland weddings need a photographer who’s comfortable working with natural light in unpredictable conditions — dappled shade, bright clearings, low evening sun filtering through the trees. The light changes constantly and the best moments don’t wait for it to be perfect. I’ve photographed enough woodland weddings to know how to work with what’s there rather than against it — moving through the site quietly, reading the day as it unfolds, and finding the images that capture how the whole thing actually felt. The result is a gallery that looks like the woodland, not a studio.
