Calke Abbey is one of Derbyshire’s most atmospheric wedding venues — a National Trust site full of history, character, and dramatic backdrops. John & Francesca chose it for their wedding, and it was the perfect setting for their relaxed but stylish day.
A Ceremony in the Riding Stables
The Riding Stables at Calke Abbey is one of the most impressive wedding spaces I’ve photographed. It’s huge, rustic, and atmospheric — the kind of space that feels grand without being over-the-top. John & Francesca gathered all their friends and family here for the ceremony, with the vaulted ceilings and exposed brick creating the perfect backdrop for their vows.
Afterwards, the celebrations flowed seamlessly into drinks and dancing in the very same space. It’s rare to find a venue that balances history and practicality so well, but Calke Abbey nails it.
Exploring the Grounds by Golf Buggy
One of the highlights of the day was jumping on a golf buggy with John & Francesca to explore the Calke Abbey grounds for their portraits. We headed out into the parkland, stopping at hidden corners, dramatic ruins, and wide open countryside views. These moments away from the crowd gave the couple a breather and gave us space to capture some candid, editorial-style portraits.
