Rachel and Toby were looking for photos to match their fun and laid-back personalities, falling in love with a relaxed wedding photography style to capture their day.

The couple met whilst at Bath University, living just two floors apart and getting to know each other before making it official a few months later. Fast forward to their wedding at the gorgeous Grittenham Barn in Sussex, they explained the inspiration behind their alternative wedding day.

A Fun and Relaxed Wedding

“We wanted the day to be as fun and relaxed as possible for everybody. Also, we are pretty foodie so knew we wanted to get that part right too! We named the tables after streets we had lived on, and Rachel’s Mum created some artwork for a personal touch.” It was a real family affair, with readings from the couple’s siblings, and photos of both parents’ wedding days hanging next to the homemade cake.

Rachel and Toby knew they wanted to capture their day as it happened, looking for relaxed wedding photography with a documentary style to make it feel less formal. After booking me, we then actually had an introduction at Rachel’s brother’s wedding, and thankfully Rachel told me, “We instantly knew we’d made the right decision!”

The Art of a Good Marriage

Peppering their day with personality was particularly prevalent in the couple’s choice of alternative wedding music and heartfelt ceremony readings. The bride arrived to a beautiful arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Rachel’s siblings played and sung Beatles songs while the couple signed the register in a personal and heartfelt moment.

In terms of wedding readings, they chose The Art of a Good Marriage by Wilferd Peterson and a classic in 1 Corinthians 13 which includes the lines ‘Love is patient, Love is kind.’

After which, Rachel and Toby left the ceremony to That’s What’s Up by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and kicked things off by arriving at the reception to Baby I’m Burnin by Dolly Parton. Their first dance was to Romeo & Juliet by The Killers.

A Grittenham Barn Wedding

Choosing a South Downs wedding photographer to match the rustic countryside theme of their location, Rachel and Toby were keen to include the beautiful Sussex stone barn and its surroundings, including a lake, orchard and woodland. There was plenty of scope at Grittenham Barn for relaxed wedding photography, ensuring the important parts of the day were recorded. Rachel told me, “The wedding service felt very important to us, where we shared our vows. And a packed dancefloor later on!”
