Relaxed East London Wedding: From the Archives

On my latest look through the archives, I stumbled across Daisy and Graeme’s relaxed East London wedding from 2017. Originally featured on Rock n Roll Bride, they held day at Dalston’s The Roost – a former Victorian pub turned film and event space packed with vintage charm and quirky props.

The Inspiration: Relaxed and Non-Traditional

Inspired by each other (“as cheesy as it made be!”) Daisy and Graeme wanted a relaxed East London wedding that differed from the traditional events their friends had thrown and felt authentic to them.  “We were stubborn about having things our way,” Daisy told me, “and we don’t regret it one bit!”

So they had their ceremony at Stoke Newington Town Hall, complete with confetti exit before taking a classic red London bus to the reception venue. In terms of style and decor, they let The Roost do the hard work for them. Instead, they just added some fairy lights, colourful bunting and handmade, vintage vinyl placenames as a keepsake for their guests. Flowers by Augustus Bloom were carefree, with the only requirement – they included the bride’s namesake!

Alternative First Dance: Moonage Daydream by David Bowie

How’s this for an alternative first dance idea? Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. Daisy told me: “The thought of slow dancing to a song and having everyone watch, made us cringe a little” she said, “but we also knew we wanted a moment to be like ‘we’ve done it!’ We couldn’t possibly have the wedding without including our hero, David Bowie. My parents are massive Bowie fans (my older sister is called Bowie!) and we felt that having a song by him at our wedding the year he sadly passed away, was a tribute to him.

The song we chose was Moonage Daydream, not the most typical first dance! The Ziggy era was our favourite, and it’s hard to get a Bowie song from that time which was soft or slow. When it kicks in straight away I get butterflies, it’s an amazing song; sang and danced for a bit, and then dragged our parents in, which soon turned into all the guests crowding round us – it was such a beautiful moment!”
