I’m Dale, a documentary wedding photographer based in East Sussex. Sarah and Hank flew over from the States for their wedding in Rye — a ceremony at St Anthony’s Church followed by confetti on the steps, then a reception at The George. Their family came too. Parents, grandparents, cousins, all of it — three generations making the trip for a wedding four thousand miles from home.
No stiff poses, no awkward lineups. Sarah and Hank wanted the day documented as it actually happened, not staged for the camera — which is exactly how I work. That meant confetti chaos outside the church, portraits on Mermaid Street, and a reception in one of The George’s rooms I hadn’t shot before: pink chinoiserie wallpaper, a disco ball hanging where you’d least expect one, and a dance floor that didn’t slow down until the family finally called it a night.
Getting Ready in Rye
Sarah’s dress had an embroidered floral bodice — seed pearls, tiny hand-stitched flowers, the kind of detail that only really shows up close. A bridesmaid in lilac tulle helped her into her veil while the room filled with that particular pre-wedding energy: half nerves, half excitement, everyone talking at once.
Confetti at St Anthony’s
Sarah and Hank married at St Anthony’s Church, the same spot where John and Kristen said their vows. Confetti came down in fistfuls the second they stepped outside — pink, white, blue, caught mid-air against the stone archway. Hank laughing before the kiss even landed properly.
Portraits on Mermaid Street
We ducked away from the crowd for ten minutes on Mermaid Street, cobbles underfoot, timber-framed houses either side. Sarah’s family had never seen anything like it. Neither had most of the guests, judging by the number of phones out.
Dancing Until the Family Went Home
By the evening it was arms in the air, drinks spilling, three generations on the same dance floor. Grandparents in wide-brimmed hats watching from the edges before eventually giving in and joining. Nobody wanted to be the one to call it a night — least of all the people who’d flown furthest to be there.
