George in Rye Wedding Photographer | John & Kristen | Dale Weeks

I’m Dale, a documentary wedding photographer based in East Sussex. John and Kristen flew over from the States for their wedding in Rye – a spring celebration at St Anthony’s Church followed by a reception at The George. Their guests did the same. A room full of Americans discovering one of England’s most beautiful medieval towns for the first time, and a couple who’d been planning this from 3,000 miles away for the best part of two years.

No stiff poses, no awkward lineups. John and Kristen wanted their day documented honestly – which is exactly how I work. I’d been with them since the engagement shoot eighteen months earlier, so by the time the wedding arrived it felt less like a job and more like being there for people I already knew well.

The Long Room at The George is a brilliant place to start a wedding day. Makeover Box Sussex doing hair and makeup, Anna keeping everything on track, and that quiet pre-ceremony energy before the day properly begins.

John and Kristen were walked from their ceremony at St Anthony’s Church by Rye’s town crier — which is exactly the kind of detail that makes a destination wedding in England worth flying 3,000 miles for. Their American guests had no idea what to make of it.

The First Look

Before the guests arrived in the courtyard, John and Kristen had a private first look in the ballroom. Just the two of them, seeing each other for the first time. One of my favourite moments of the day.

Drinks in the Courtyard

The George’s courtyard in spring is hard to beat — and with exclusive use of the whole venue, there was nowhere else anyone needed to be. Guests spilled outside, drinks in hand, the old town of Rye doing its thing around them.

Dinner, Dancing and the Bar

Dinner in the ballroom, then the bar, then the dancefloor. The kind of evening that builds naturally when the venue is right and the crowd is up for it. John and Kristen’s guests had travelled a long way — they weren’t going home early.

John + Kristen

Thoughtful, methodical, yet effortless.

“Dale has an incredible ability to be present without ever feeling intrusive — capturing moments naturally while ensuring every important detail is documented. He was part of our journey for 18 months, from our engagement shoot to our save-the-date photos and finally our wedding day. Having him by our side throughout made the entire experience feel seamless and special. We couldn’t have asked for a better person.”
